Quanto basta

Quanto basta is a term used in Italian cooking meaning ‘just enough’; a suggestion you should use your own judgement. Add just enough salt, cook until it’s just done, glug-in just enough wine to enhance, but not overwhelm…

It’s something I think many of us miss from everyday life, in both directions. The expectation of perfection can be stifling, sure, but also the expectation of a hand-hold, a requirement for detailed instructions in everything removes the pleasure from – and of – learning. It is perhaps the difference between knowledge and understanding, and effective critical thinking can only exist with the latter.

The pleasure can come in the journey, not just the destination; in the mistakes, not just perfection; in the knowledge that what you’ve achieved is because of something you’ve done, not what somebody else wrote down.
