“I am still learning”

I’m a big fan of Francisco Goya’s work, possibly the only artist who has brought a genuine tear to my eye when I saw his work at the Prado Museum in Madrid.

His ‘simpler’ works – often just ink, chalk and crayon – offer a thoughtful insight into his soul, none more so for me than Aun aprendo – I am still learning. The old man, his sad eyes, leaning on his canes. But still learning.

Goya’s Disasters of War collection is particularly affecting, but I also defy anyone who has ever loved a dog to look at The drowing Dog and not feel a huge hit of emotion.
